Breaking the Spirit of Poverty (March 7)

Hope Lives
Compassion changes everything: how you view your world...yourself...even Jesus. While many feel despair at the state of the world we can find hope in Jesus. This two week exploration of compassion is aimed at both head and heart, inspiring a new way to interact with the world.
March 7: Breaking the Spirit of Poverty
Often we fail to give to those in need because we feel we don’t have enough ourselves. We assume that there is a finite amount of resources and if we give generously those resources will run dry and we will be poor ourselves. Instead of believing the Bible that we should operate from a spirit of abundance we instead live in bondage to accumulation and suffer from a spirit of poverty. We can break this spirit of poverty in ourselves is by giving extravagantly – not from our excess but from our necessities. Scarcity vs. Abundance: Deut. 15:10; Prov. 21:13; Prov. 11:24; 1 Tim. 6:17-19; 2 Cor. 9:6, 8, 10-11; The Story of the Widow of Zarephath: 1 Kings 17:7-24; Our Mandate/Response: Isaiah 58; Matthew 25:31-46; 1 Tim. 6:17-19; Ch. 3 Hope Lives Pastor’s Guide

Practicing Spiritual Life: Contemplation & Meditation (February 21)

Practicing Spiritual Life (Part 3)
February 21: Contemplation & Meditation
Christian meditation and contemplation is the practice of reflecting upon, ruminating about, and considering matters of our faith. We recognize that every experience offers more than meets the eye and are open to seeing the unseen world. In other religions, meditation serves as a means to empty the mind in order to become detached from the world. Christians agree that meditation is an effective technique to quiet and clear the mind and achieve detachment from the world. But, for the Christian, detachment is not enough; we must go on to attachment. Detachment from the confusion all around us is in order to have a richer attachment to God and is a preparation for God's inspiration.
