Black Letter Gospel: Silent Wisdom

On October 1st, Tim will be speaking as we continue our
Black Letter Gospel Series.

Topic: His words silenced them.

We'll be looking at instances in the Gospels when wise leaders of the day tried to trip Jesus up with word traps and ve
rbal sparring, but he silenced them with just a few words.

Here are some ideas/concepts to brainstorm:
The cheapness of words/how eas
y it is to have speak/share your opinion:
Ridiculous blogs that have some fame to them

Video Ideas:

Nooma – Noise

Moments of Speechlessness
Wall Street’s “Greed is Good” Speech

Good will Hunting – Professor and Janitor: “this is so easy for me”
Proof?

Dumb Answers Montage:
SNL – Debbie Downer
Arrested Development
The Office
SNL – The Lovers

Music:

Speechless – Steven Curtis Chapman
(as a meditation song or closer)
Unwritten – Natasha Bedingfield
Switchfoot – If our music is adding to the noise, then turn it off
Adding to the Noise – from the beautiful letdown
Mockingbird – Derek Webb
Silence is Easy – Starsailor

Have at it!

Hey Tim -
Not sure what you were thinking message wise but this topic reminds me of McLaren's whole "other" level of conversation. How Jesus doesn't respond in the sxame manner but raises the level of conversation into the mysterious realm that floats above normal human discourse. Just thought I'd mention it.

Songs:
Speed of Sound - Coldplay
Silence is Easy - Starsailor
Adding to the Noise - Switchfoot

In reading lyrics Adding to the Noise seems to be the most likely to work for the service. Here they are:

What's it gonna take
to slow us down
to let the silence spin us around?
What's it gonna take
to drop this town?
We've been spinning at the speed of sound.
Stepping out of those convenience stores
what could we want but more more more?

From the third world
to the corporate core
we are a symphony of modern humanity

If we're adding to the noise
turn off this song
If we're adding to the noise
turn off your stereo, stereo, stereo

I dont know
what they're gonna think of next
genetic engineers of the most high tech
A couple new ways
to fall into debt
I'm a nervous wreck but I'll bet
that that T.V. set
tells us what we've wanted to hear
But none of these sound bites
are coming in clear

From the third world to the corporate ear
we are the symphony of modern humanity.

Worship Tunes:
I Stand In Awe (kinda communitcates silence...)
Speak to Me
Sit Awhile

The opposite:
Our Love Is Loud
Make a Joyful Noise/I Will Not Be Silent

Doing some sort of silence activity - maybe after the message could be useful. Could even do silence for a while followed by the Adding to the Noise song. Who knows. That's all I got.
